  1. THE HIT LIST - BEST SPECS OF 2010 is now out. Get it while it's hot -- http://www.tracking-board.com/the-hit-list-2010-the-best-spec-scripts-of-2010/

    1. boynotorious

I wonder how many of the people who voted actually read the scripts in question?

    2. LeftyJones

Thought of an idea to tweak it for (Future?) editions... So it bends a little further from Black List. Since we're talking about specs... Ask the voters -- "WHICH FIVE SPECS WOULD YOU BUY IF YOU WERE RUNNING THE STUDIO?" Gives it a slightly different slant and would be cool to view it in those terms.

Kitchen Sink, The Forgotten Man, Expulsion, Triple Nine & Hoof Harrington's Greatest Hits.

All had massive potential. Less Kitchen Sink, which in my opinion should be filmed as is. And yesterday god-d-it.

  4. THE EXTRA CHEAP BLACK FRIDAY EDITION Welcome, readers. I’m Mike De Luca and this is “On The Slate” — where we talk about what’s hot, what’s not, what’s overrated, what’s underrated, what’s awful, what’s awesome, and…you know, you were here last week. If not, welcome. One week we could be talking about a trend in script sales, or, on a more indulgent day, offering unfiltered commentary on my grandmother’s recipe for baked clams. Why? Because, in the words of Denzel Washington as Coach Boone in “Remember The Titans”: “This is not a democracy. This is a dictatorship. I am the law.” Now that we’ve got that cleared up, now that you’re all counting the pounds you gained on Thanksgiving, I want you to get up, go to the fridge and grab another beer. (I’ll wait.) Okay, now open that beer and we’ll get started. Feel free to have another. You may want to be drunk by the end of this. “Harry Potter toots box office horn”. That was the headline in Variety about the $330.1 million it took, globally. What the headline should have been was “Half A Movie Makes $125 Million In The US”. You heard me. “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1” is an exciting entertainment, a riveting tale of friendship, loyalty, and self-sacrifice, but it is a film you won’t see the rest of until July. Confession time, dear readers. I am a convert to the Church of Potter. I can match your Quidditch with my thestral. I spend wasted hours contemplating hallows and horcruxes, cursing omissions in the adaptations (Damn you, Steve Kloves, damn your soul!), and wondering if Voldemort is really…See what I mean? If you haven’t read the books, and are actually interested, this is what Doc Brown would term “some serious shit”, which you won’t see till July. And it is highly appropriate that I mention the Doc, as it was the limited gain of the three month gap between “Back To The Future II” and “III” that exemplifies why, from a business standpoint, it pays to let the anticipation build. But, from a fan perspective, it sucks the snorkack. “Tonto, don’t go to town! They’re gonna beat you up again, man!” - Bill Cosby, “I Started Out As A Child” If you haven’t heard, “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski has signed on to direct Disney’s “The Lone Ranger”, penned by “Pirates” scribes Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio(rewritten by Justin Haythe) with Johnny Depp signed on to play Tonto. Yes, Tonto. The Native American sidekick who Bill Cosby famously implored not to go to town, lest he have the snot beat out of him. But who will sign on to play the title character (thankless, as it is clear that Johnny Depp will be the star)? Presumably, someone willing to tell Depp to go and get the snot beat out of him. (Somewhere, Orlando Bloom shuffles his feet.) It is also worth noting that George W. Trindle, who created the character of John Reid, The Lone Ranger (in 1932!), is also the creator of Britt Reid AKA “The Green Hornet”, which is coming to a theater near you, courtesy of Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry. Only one film about the Lone Ranger has ever hit theaters and that is 1981’s ‘The Legend of the Lone Ranger”, with a lead performance by actor Klinton Spilsbury so horrendous, all of his lines were dubbed by James Keach. You know, like Sam T. Jones in “Flash Gordon”. This would be a good time to grab another beer. Got that beer? Okay. Have you seen the trailer for Duncan Jones’ “Source Code“? If not, do so RIGHT HERE. Take your time. It’s worth it. One year after his breakout success with “Moon”, the Son of Bowie, master of making convincing sci-fi on a budget (suck it, Blomkamp!), is back. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Capt. Coulter Stevens, who, through a secret government project is sent back into the body of a young librarian named Sean Frentess, on a train 17 minutes before a terrorist attack blows it up. His mission: find the bomber. SPOILER GET BEER He fails initially, and gets blown up. This process repeats itself over and over again. END SPOILER DRINK BEER Somewhere, Scott Bakula is crying salty tears. What is particularly fascinating is how easily one can differentiate between the inventions of the two credited writers Ben Ripley and Billy Ray, just from the trailer. In the original script by Ben Ripley, Coulter is forced to bond with a woman Frentess (the man whose body Coulter inhabits) barely knows from his daily commute. In the trailer, it is clear Michelle Monaghan’s character (who was a goth in the Ripley draft) is now Frentess’ significant other. Are such changes for better or worse? Who’s to say? Has my excitement been diminished? Hell, no! Moving on… On a more high-brow note, where have all the badasses gone? I’ll tell you where. Sly Stallone put them all together in “The Expendables”. You laugh, but when Terry Crews came out with the mother of all automatic shotguns and shouted, “REMEMBER THAT AT CHRISTMAS!”, my fist was pumped in the air. Yes, another confession. And Oscar Wilde is my priest. Speaking of Sly, he was in the 1981 soccer classic “Victory”, or “Escape To Victory”(as its known in the UK), which is now getting remade by producers Gianni Nunnari and Craig J. Flores. Directed by John friggin’ Huston, “Victory” (if you haven’t seen it) is “The Great Escape” of soccer movies. Like “The Expendables”, it features a cast of certified badasses: Sly Stallone, Michael Caine, Max Von Sydow, and most significantly, Pele. I know, no Connery. Anyway, they all play inmates at a WW2 German POW camp. They put together a team and are challenged to a big game in a stadium against the SS. Do they stay and play and win? Or do they escape? It’s actually based on a real-life game called “The Death Match” that was played in 1941 Kiev. A team of locals played against the SS. They were told to lose. They won. The real ending was not pretty. But, let’s end with this column on a happy note: with my grandma’s baked clam recipe! You thought I was kidding, didn’t you? Well, unlike “Skyline”, here’s something you’ll actually enjoy. Mike’s Grandma’s Baked Clams Saute 1 lg. Onion chopped 3 cloves minced gloves 1 tblsp minced dried parsley 1 stick of butter of ½ butter, ½ oil Cook till soft. Add 4 cans of minced clams with juice Add 1 8 oz. Package of Pepperidge Farm Herbed Stuffing (Any brand will do) Mix well Spread into 9 inch baking dishes Sprinkle grated cheese on top Bake uncovered at 400 degrees for 20 minutes See you next week! Mike

  6. Ok, noticing not many people are reading the several heads up & updates re: the library that were posted, instead commenting over and over, so I've instead set up a topic "Lets get this out of status" to discuss if you like in the chit chat section.

  7. So, just got word from the main site, that some of those links over there to the top left will remain down for the time being. Details to come.

    1. boynotorious

And with that I am worried about uploading into the File Exchange. Because if you can't keep the library up isn't that just as damaging if not more so as it is all currently in-development scripts?

  8. Ok, after a few emails from some of our members here, apparently my initial update, and the updated on the main site wasn't clear enough. To my knowledge, the guys & gals on TB are doing maintenance. However, as I stated, some sections of the sites may be up and down. I do not know anything about the library, etc. beyond that. Continuing to ask about it, seems a bit unnecessary, until everyone is back from the holiday on Monday or Tuesday.

  9. Sneaking away from the family for a few minutes to check in, and to say I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. See you all back here on Mon/Tues.

  10. WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION OF “ON THE SLATE” WITH MIKE DE LUCA (Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls, I would like to take a moment, before this piece starts to welcome aboard a dear friend & colleague of The Tracking Board, who after some hefty negotiating (blackmail), has agreed to come aboard, and offer up a new, and exciting weekly column. This new segment will serve as a great place to find a little more insight into the fun, flare, opinion, and excitement (or lack thereof) of this wonderful industry we all manage to live in, and still love. And, perhaps along the way, spill a little wisdom and insight as to what is really going on behind the curtain of this modern empire we know as… Hollywood. So, without further ado, I’d like to hand it over to our very own… Mike De Luca.) Welcome, readers. I’m Mike and this is the beginning of what will be my new weekly column entitled “On The Slate.” In here, is where we will talk about what’s hot, what’s not, what’s overrated, what’s underrated, what’s awful, what’s awesome, and… well, you get the point. Some days it might be a trend in scripts sales we’re tracking, or just unfiltered commentary on how strange it is to see Tom Cruise dangling himself off the side of the tallest building in the world, in Dubai. As Bobby Brown said before Britney, “It’s my prerogative”. Writing-wise, I strive for the bombast of John Milius and the wit of Oscar Wilde. If you are fluent in the work of one or both of those individuals, then we are off to a good start. If you’re a Bowie fan, even better. Let’s begin. Have you seen the teaser for Jon Favreau’s “COWBOYS & ALIENS”? If not, do so right now, RIGHT HERE. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. I recommend it. Favreau has come a long way from the “Martin and Lewis in Manhattan” hijinks of his feature debut, 2001’s “Made”. We are looking at a director who has mastered the challenge of artfully showcasing state of the art VFX, without hermetically-sealing the performances. Hence, Downey, Jr. is allowed to break out and do his thing as Tony Stark. I can only hope Harrison Ford, after all that “Crystal Skull” nonsense, is given an opportunity to do the same in “C&A” (yeah, that’s what the cool kids are calling it now). And, really, who does not want to see the stone cold eyes of Daniel Craig bead down on an extraterrestrial invader, as his wrist ignites a pulsing blue ray that would make Q blush? Remember, Bond is on hold, and Craig is signed for all three of David Fincher’s “The Girl With Dragon Tattoo” trilogy remakes. So, if we ever see Craig as Bond again, only time, and box office success elsewhere will decide. All while the actor who played the same role in the originals, Mikael Blomqvist, is one of the villains in the new “MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL”. Or as I call it, “Mission: Impossible: Crappy Title”. As you can see, it all comes back to Tom Cruise dangling off the side of a building. It’s a lot like Steve Coogan as Tony Wilson in “24 Hour Party People” talking about musical trends being a “double helix”, with one movement in the descendant, while another’s in the ascendant. In other words, the economy falls into the shitter, Tom Cruise climbs a building and it’s business as usual. But I kid Tom Cruise. This is confession time, friends. I am addicted to the “Mission Impossible” films with no possibility of recovery. “MI3”, in particular. Maybe it’s the awe-inspiring spectacle of watching the drone planes blow that “True Lies”-looking bridge to hell and back and Cruise allowing himself to be pulled back into a car via wire to simulate the impact of the blast. Or, maybe it was the sight of Father Cruise strolling through the halls of the Vatican, with a flickering hint of a smile. I can also enact entire scenes from the first film verbatim. “I’m going to kind of miss being disreputable”. So, now that we know we know each other a little better, we can move on… “If a man is sufficiently unimaginative to produce evidence in support of a lie, he might just as well speak the truth at once” – Vivian “The Decay of Lying: An Observation”, Oscar Wilde. In other words, if you’re going to lie, lie big and back it up, for that is the only way for your lie to become profitable. Such was the case for Christopher D. Ford and Jon Watts, who had the audacity to make “CLOWN”, a “Grindhouse”-style trailer for a non-existent horror film, and attach “Hostel” director Eli Roth’s name to it. For those who have not seen it, Go now – RIGHT HERE. (Yes, I’ll wait… again). The lie paid off, and impressed Eli Roth so much that he introduced the Dynamic Deceitful Duo to Brian Oliver of Cross Creek Pictures, and a deal has been struck. Well done, boys. Oscar Wilde would be proud. “Am I smarter than an 11-year old?” Or, more specifically, “Am I smarter than an 11-year-old with a development deal?” This is a question many writers will be asking themselves upon hearing the announcement of Robert Downey, Jr. and Susan Downey’s “HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS”, produced with Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment. The film has been adapted as a potential vehicle for Downey Jr., by Ben Karlin (The Daily Show) and Stu (“Elektra”) Zicherman, from a 2008 self-help dating book by then-9-year-old Alec Greven. It became a New York Times bestseller, and has spawned three sequels. Said the author to the BBC Newsbeat report Ian MacKenzie: “The best choice for most boys is a regular girl. Remember some pretty some pretty girls are cold-hearted when it comes to boys.” Sounds like my sixth grade paper on “Great Expectations”. Why am I suddenly reminded of 4 and a half year old kid Jordy’s 1992 international hit single, “Dur Dur D’etre Un Bebe! (It’s So Tough To Be A Baby)”? Anyway, more power to young Greven. Not that Tony Robbins is lying awake at night. Unless he has insomnia. Which brings me to a serious note… Where have all the good stoner movies gone? It’s been years since Cheech and Chong have made anything watchable, and outside of a Method and Red joint (huh-uh) 2001’s “How High”, and “Pineapple Express”, occasions for the munchies have been limited. Fortunately, art house auteur-turned stoner auteur David Gordon Green has got your back, following up “Pineapple Express”, not with another elegiac Malick-esque ode to rural insecurity, but a bona fide sword and sorcery epic, where our heroes get stoned, swear, and make dick and fart jokes. The film? “YOUR HIGHNESS”. The stars Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel. However, most of the buzz seems centered around “Iron Man 2” scribe Justin Theroux’s performance as the evil wizard Leezar. But, there you have it. New slacker/stoner movie. Humanity? Saved. YOU DECIDE. As I sit here on my perch like J.J. Hunsecker in “The Sweet Smell of Success”, my thoughts drift to a certain upcoming day involving a turkey. Are than any truly great Thanksgiving movies? “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”, perhaps. “Addams Family Values” with Wednesday as Pocahontas in a camp play, terrorizing “the Pilgrims”? My vote would be for “Almost Famous”. It has this ever-present autumnal ambience to it, like the musty feel of a worn LP, and the warmth of what it means to be a family. Have a Happy Turkey Day, friends. And remember, if you’re assaulted on Black Friday, aim for their kidneys. Mike Want to follow Mike & all of his industry adventures?
