  1. YOUR GRANDMA IS HOT EDITION Welcome, readers. I’m Mike De Luca and this is ON THE SLATE. This is where we talk about what’s hot (your grandma), what’s not, what’s overrated, what’s underrated, what’s awful, what’s awesome…well, you know, we met in the showers at the YMCA. You passed me that bar of Irish Spring. Wait a minute…that wasn’t you? But, didn’t we… Oh shit. Well, anyway…welcome! One week we might be talking about Bill Murray crashing some dude’s karaoke party or offering unfiltered commentary on my other career as an adult film star. But before we dive into any of that, there are three things you need to know – #1 – This is ON THE SLATE with Mike De Luca. #2 – I did not produce A Man Apart. #3 – No, really… I did not produce A Man Apart. Do you love Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly? Of course you do, you’re Americans. Well, in case you are simply unaware, or are, in fact, a Communist, they were in a little movie directed by Adam McKay (Funny Or Die, “Anchorman”, “Talladega Nights”, ‘The Other Guys”) called “Step Brothers”. For those of you who are simply ignorant, or who make sweet love to Senor Stalin, the film tells the story of two immature spoiled and stupid men, ages 39-40. Each lives with a single parent. When their parents decided to marry each other, it ignites between the two men a feud of biblical proportions that makes Cain and Abel look like a couple of punks. Fortunately, the two share a mutual desire to have sex with John Stamos (you know, if they were female). This leads to many great misadventures, which made me laugh my jewels off. (Fortunately, I know a good surgeon. Would you like a referral? No. Okay. Fine. Be that way. May I continue, please? Oh, look who thinks he/she/it can wear the daddy pants!) Anyway, at a business meeting, they promote their joint business venture “Prestige Worldwide”, culminating in the unveiling of a rap video, “Boats ‘N Hoes”. Check it out. Filthy and funny and furry, like a McRib sandwich. (It’s back, you know.) And now it appears the brothers Huff ‘N Doback may be releasing their own rap album. And I know you’re excited, too…unless your name is Kim Jong Il. Moving on… In other news, NASA has put up a special website to challenge myths in the film “2012” to enlighten members of the public. In other words, stupid people. Next! You ever watch a film where you hear a song, and it introduces you to a band and somehow changes your life? Clearly, I’m not talking about the soundtrack to “Death To Smoochy”. For me, it was the 1998 Alfonso Cuaron take on “Great Expectations” and the band was Pulp. Now, I know what you’re thinking: why the hell did I go see that movie? Well, I’ll just say it had nothing to with the prospect of seeing Gwyneth Paltrow naked. It had nothing to with that at all. (F-you, Chris Martin. I saw her first.) Anyway, the song was “Like A Friend”, sung in the bitter, sardonic tones of Jarvis Cocker, who, vocally, is the British equivalent of your pervy older brother. But with more heart, and less of an arrest record. The song was featured in a scene where a nude Gwyneth is sketched by Ethan Hawke. The fact that I was actually paying attention to the song used in the scene is indicative of its quality. This tune, a tale of a relationship and one man’s casually destructive behavior (not that I would know anything about that), lead me to buy the album. Yes, it was this Hardcore. Pulp would later disband in 2003, but their influence would crop up now and then. would be featured in Mike Leigh’s “Happy-Go-Lucky” and would be later be covered by William Shatner. Jarvis Cocker would appear as a Claymation character in Wes Anderson’s 2009 adaptation of “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”, would play a member of with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood in “Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire” and would go on to release two well-received solo albums. I never thought I would get the chance to see them live. Well, I was wrong. I may finally get the chance to see a band that rocked my world. And, really, it’s all thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow. And her carefully-obscured breasts. Which, I hear, are “Country Strong”. Next! In “Creatively Bankrupt News”, we have the announcement that renowned auteur McG (“Terminator: Salvation”, “Charlie’s Angels”) has been given the reigns to the film adaptation of Hasbro’s Parker Brothers board game “Ouija”. Yes, millions of dollars will be sunk into a film based on the board you used to scare your siblings with. Thanks, “Tron: Legacy” writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, for making us realize we needed this. It is being produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, which is, in fact, the shock of the century. Century shocked, we press on… In WTF news, Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, the creative team behind “Reno 911”, as well “A Night At The Museum” and “Daddy Day Care”, are now slated to rewrite (with Garant directing and Lennon starring) a script called THE WEE MCGINTY about a leprechaun who loses his memory and becomes a firefighter. Yes, it’s hard out there for a leprechaun. Really, have we come this far from Next! Now, in the last week, ON THE SLATE has received quite a few letters accusing this column of “promoting aggressive alcoholic consumption”. Anne Bellows of Detroit, Michigan wrote, “Mr. De Luca seems to think Jello shots are the solution to a long and happy life.” Wrote Alan Philips from Red Hook, New Jersey, “His mind is in the gutter, and that gutter is Milwaukee”. Not true. I’d like to think of ON THE SLATE as something of an ongoing cautionary tale. Just watch this video. Think about it. And have another drink. Until next week, keep your pants on, unless you have a good reason to take them off, Mike

  6. THE REAR END OF 2010 Welcome, readers. I’m Mike De Luca and this is ON THE SLATE. This is where we talk about what’s hot, what’s not, what’s overrated, what’s underrated, what’s awful, what’s awesome…well, you know, we met at that Christmas party. You were wearing your underwear on your head and singing “The Battle Hymn Of The Republic”. That wasn’t you? Are you sure? That wasn’t you with your bare ass on the copier showing what the Good Lord gave you?…Aw, shit. In any case, welcome! One week we might be talking about why Russell Crowe hates you, or offering up unfiltered commentary on how CGI cannot hide a fat ass. But before we start in on that, there are three things you need to know – #1 – This is ON THE SLATE with Mike De Luca. #2 – I did not produce John Q. #3 – How I can talk about such things? Because this is ON THE SLATE! Let the descent in quality begin… Just when you think you can’t stomach another shitty trailer without vomiting popcorn on your neighbor, something like “CEDAR RAPIDS” comes along to throw you a life preserver. A life preserver with the words “Party Naked” on it. Check out the trailer HERE. Pardon me while I do devil horns and make rude comments about your sister. Pretty sweet, right? So while kids are getting all high and mighty and jazzed about Terrence Malick’s newest bit of ponderous narration, I’m going to get wasted and watch this movie. For that, amigos, is how I roll. Now make me some Jello shots. I command you! “Alcohol, taken in sufficient quantities, may produce all the effects of drunkenness.” –Oscar Wilde Okay, have you got those Jello shots? Are they strong? Good, ‘cause we’re going to do something special, seein’ how it’s the rear end of the year and all. Welcome to the ON THE SLATE drinking game. Okay, grab a shot. Don’t touch the red. The red’s mine. Okay, now I want you think of something you hated from 2010, something that truly sucked. Okay ? Now hit it. BOOM! That was for Jack Black being in “Gulliver’s Travels”. That brain cell devoted being up in arms about that suckpile – gone! Now you know the game. I bring up something wretched and we both do a shot to forget the pain. Here, take the yellow one. Why? ‘Cause I don’t want it. Moving on…. “Winter’s Bone”. I get it. It’s all rootsy and rural and impoverished and the girl can cook a damn rabbit. But the soundtrack! It was like being attacked by an army of enchanted banjos. Instead of Mickey Mouse and the broomsticks, it’s me and some folksy friggin’ banjos coming at me like something out of “Deliverance”. Yes, to violate me. In the words of Will Smith, “Awhellno!” Let’s do it. BOOM! Notice that I keep making the same onomatopoeia Denzel does in “Training Day”. Why? Because here I am Denzel, you’re Ethan Hawke, and that’s the way it’s gonna be. Okay, rookie! Next! “What the fuck happened to you, man? Shit, your ass used to be beautiful.” -Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), Jackie Brown “Devil”. M. Night Shymalan, your ass used to be beautiful. Seriously. “Unbreakable”. “The Sixth Sense”. Both had mystery, awe, and intelligence. Then it was on to Mel Gibson and aliens that had the same SPOILER weakness as the Wicked Witch of the West END SPOILER. And don’t get me started on “The Village” and its “deep” message about life in the post 9/11 world. All the social relevance of a potato chip bag. But “Devil”, man, “Devil”! M. Night’s first entry into the Night Chronicles. For those of you who haven’t seen it (those of you with self-respect), it’s about some yo-yos trapped in an elevator and one of them is the DEVIL. Such a spoiler. And that’s about it. They’re all assholes, all selfish, all (in the movie’s logic) deserving of death. But my point is, the film is awful, like a –couple-of-buds-and-some-suds-and-you’ll-still-be-bored awful. With no nudity. Seriously, someone needs to leave a flaming bag of crap on M. Night’s lawn for this one. How can we forget this appalling assault on the senses? BOOM! (What? That was the orange one. If you can’t pay attention to what you’re drinking, then there really is no helping you. I mean, you’ve got a problem, man.) Next! But you know what? Enough of this Lite Brite-murdering negativity! Let’s drink to the awesome! Let’s toast to the excellent? You ready. I can’t hear you! YOU READY? Okay. First up, the soundtrack to Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World”. Nigel Godrich, the mastermind behind Radiohead’s “OK Computer”, put got together Beck, garage rock maestros the Black Lips, Metric, and others, all doing original cuts for the fictional bands in the movie. The soundtrack also has the Stones, Frank Black from the Pixies, and Marc Bolan and T. Rex doing “Teenage Dream”. What, you don’t know Marc Bolan? You don’t have love for T. Rex? Then, in lieu of slapping you and sending you to school, I urge you to WATCH THIS. Now, doesn’t your soul feel just a little bit better? Good. Blue one. BOOM! Next… Rob Corddry in “Hot Tub Time Machine”. Now, I know you have love for the Cusack. Hell, everyone has love for the Cusack. John Cusack is a man among men. He’s a hitman, Lloyd Dobler, and some dude who owes two dollars. He’s a Grifter, he’s selling records and he’s being John Malkovich, as we speak. And he was in this year’s “ ”, which is one of those rare movies that makes you feel something – awesome! And, amidst all its awesomeness, was a secret weapon: Rob Corddry. Yes, the Cusack and Craig Robinson got off some good ones, in the tale of three friends sent back the 80s in the bodies of their younger selves, but Corddry owned. Dude should have an Academy Award. You heard it hear first. I remember Corddry back when the Red Sox broke the Curse of the Bambino and Corddry did a report in Boston for the Daily Show. In it, one drunk ass patron keeps telling Corddry to hit him in the face for good luck, in the thickest Southie accent imaginable: “CAWDRY! CAWDRY! I WANT YOU TO HIT ME IN THE FACE! AS HAAD AS YOU CAN! AS HAAD AS YOU CAN!” Eventually, Corddry slaps the dude in the face and the guy gives him a big hug. You see, Corrdry is willing to slap strangers in the face as hard as he can to get the laugh. And he gives it all as the horndog Lou in “Hot Tub Time Machine”. Whether nearly killing himself listening to Motley Crue’s “ ”, talking about the sex he plans on having, or , he plays an asshole of the purest sort. . Two shot salute! On my count. Ah, screw the count. BOOM! BOOM! Anyway, that’s it for this week. 2010, don’t bump your ass on the way out! 2011, here we come! ON THE SLATE will return in “Moonkegger” Until next time, Mike
  7. NOT THE BEES EDITION Welcome, readers. I’m Mike De Luca and this is ON THE SLATE. This is where we talk about what’s hot, what’s not, what’s overrated, what’s underrated, what’s awful, what’s awesome…well, you know, I told you that time we were both in a Turkish prison, and then we…Oh…that wasn’t you? Shit. This is awkward. Well, anyway…welcome! One week we might talk about how the Black List, is not, in fact, something Rob Schneider is on, or offering unfiltered commentary on Nicolas Cage screaming, “I will die in the name of honor!” on the streets of Bucharest. But before we dive into that, there are three things you need to know – #1 – This is ON THE SLATE with Mike De Luca. #2 – I did not produce Knockaround Guys. #3 – How can I go off on so many tangents? Because, in the words of Bill Murray, “sometimes, shit happens, someone has to deal with it, and who you gonna call?”Let’s get started… “The Doors? Jim Morrison? He’s a drunken buffoon posing as a poet….Give me the Guess Who. They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic.” - Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman), “Almost Famous” (2000) Have you seen the trailer to director Terrence Malick’s long-awaited “TREE OF LIFE”? Sean Penn, Brad Pitt. Well, I’ve got news for you. No, not about that night in Tijuana… we don’t talk about that. No, it’s that if one is to go by anything in the trailer, it seems that one’s appreciation of “Tree of Life” will greatly hinge on one’s admiration/distaste for Malick’s “The Thin Red Line” and “The New World”. (Go ahead; take a moment to watch it. I’ll go play Farmville.) Have you got it? Yes, exotic locations, ponderous inner monologues. Confession time. As much as I loved John Toll’s cinematography, every time I heard one of Jim Caviezel’s “thoughts” in “Thin Red Line” – his meditations on the death of paradise in conjunction with man’s affinity for destruction – I wanted to throw Junior Mints at the screen hard enough for them to stick. And it’s not just because glassy-eyed Jim was playing one of the detached Christ-like figures he began to specialize in, years before “The Passion Of The Christ” (“Angel Eyes”, anyone?”), it had to do with the fact that in a combat situation, your average GI is not going to wax poetic on the futility of war, he is more likely thinking, “Oh shit! Duck! Don’t get shot! Do a good job!” (Disclaimer: I have no combat experience, whatsoever. But I saw “Black Hawk Down.” Once.) For Joker in “Full Metal Jacket” to make wry observations was fine – he was a journalist. Willard in “Apocalypse Now”- fine, it was Joseph Conrad. But if I thought “Thin Red Line” pissed me off, now we have what looks to be a pretentious version of a Rob Reiner film (late period, not “Stand By Me”). With dinosaurs, apparently. Discovery Channel dinosaurs, too, not the kick-ass “Jurassic Park” variety. It reminds me of Nicolas Cage as Charlie Kaufman in “Adaptation”, visualizing the origins of life on earth in obscene detail. This was a character that spent most of that film jerking off, and not just literally. “The Fountain” may have had Hugh Jackman floating in what looked like a giant testicle in space, and it may have placed him in an alternate timeline, as a Spanish conquistador searching for the Fountain of Youth (which appeared as a giant frigging tree), but the film’s more self-consciously-arty flourishes were undercut by a strong emotional hook. The dude wants to save his wife from terminal cancer. Touching, understandable. Interestingly enough, the logline for “Tree of Life” is this: “In a mystical world of folklore, several individuals embrace in a race to find the Tree of Life, said to give immortality, fertility, and other supernatural powers”. Um, okay. On the other hand, my instincts could be wrong, and this could be the greatest movie since “Weekend at Bernie’s II”. It’s only a trailer, and time will tell. Rant over. “To get back one’s youth, one merely has to repeat one’s follies” - Lord Henry Wotton, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray That lesson seems to apply to Johnny Depp, who has returned to the well for another “Pirates” picture. Or, in this case, the Fountain of Youth. Yes, there is a trailer out for “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES“. Check it out. (Mmmm…Farmville. I grew a plant.) Yes, looks somewhat exciting. Let’s do the check list. Captain Jack one-liners? Check. Drunken postures? Check. Kinetic action? Hey, wait a minute. Say what you will about the second and third installments of the “Pirates” series, one must concede they moved at a breathless pace. This…one…looks…rather…static. Gore Verbinski is out, and will soon direct Depp as Tonto in Disney’s “The Lone Ranger”. At the reins now is Rob Marshall. Yes, the guy known for “Memoirs of a Geisha”, “Chicago”, and “Nine”. Because movies about swishy rum-swilling pirates capable of acrobatic feats obviously require a director whose signature style is stagy artifice. You know, because Vincente Minnelli directed Gene Kelly and Judy Garland in “The Pirate” and stuff. In the words of the townspeople from “Blazing Saddles”, “Bullshit!” We’ll just have to see. Captain Jack, don’t suck. Next topic…. This just in: Halle Berry is set to receive another Academy Award. Not for her Golden Globe-nominated turn in the acclaimed “Frankie and Alice”, as a young multiracial woman suffering from dissociative identity disorder, but another for her Academy Award-Winning turn in 2001’s “Monster’s Ball”. Apparently, under the new rules, simulating sex with Billy Bob Thornton gets you two. No, joking. Moving on… In especially pointless news, Anne Fletcher, the auteur behind such masterpieces as “The Proposal” and “27 Dresses” has signed on to direct Working Title’s [email protected] It is based on a 2006 documentary about Northampton, MA seniors, who are part of traveling chorus that does the music of groups like The Clash and Sonic Youth. The documentary is at times uplifting, and heartbreaking. Example: the late Fred Knittle’s unforgettable rendition of , while on oxygen and suffering from congestive heart failure. It was originally supposed to be a duet, but his partner Bob Salvini died before the performance. Potent stuff, right? Well, apparently, the actual people who played themselves are not convincing enough. So now what? Team up Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and pull a “Bucket List 2”? I’m sorry. I musn’t give Rob Reiner any ideas. That’s how “North” got made. But let’s not end this on a somber note, as I’d just like to say…. Happy Holidays From On The Slate! You could do a lot worse. Mike
